New Hampshire Sheep & Wool Growers’ Association LAMBING CLINIC

Here is your chance to attend a very infomational and educational clinic about the many aspects of lambing. There will be many experts in the field as well as farmers and vetenarians. The morning session is lecture style with several presentations and slideshows followed by the an afternoon session of hands-on activities and demonstrations. Whether you are in your tenth year of lambing or your first, don't miss this great opportunity to learn from and share experiences with those who have had many years of practice. Please see the schedule below for a detailed list of events.

Schedule
The Morning Session will be at the Wells Memorial School 235 Chesham Road (Turn onto Chesham Road off Route 101 by Audrey’s Café, 1 mile up, on the left or call for directions if coming from Rt. 9 in Nelson)

8:15 – 8:30 - Registration, coffee and doughnuts

8:30 – 8:40 Introduction by NHSWGA directors

8:40 – 9:40 Nutrition and Care of Pregnant Ewes and Newborn Lambs Through Weaning. Carl Majewski, Extension Educator, Cheshire County

9:40 – 10:40 Step by step slide show of birthing and discussion of lambing sequence and care of newborn lambs in winter confinement.

10:40 – 11:30 Vaccinations for and treatment of common lambing time diseases. Dr. Charles Devinne, Animal Care Clinic.

11:30 --12:00 Speaker Panel for lambing time questions.

About the speakers

Carl Majewski is the Agricultural Agent for Cheshire County Cooperative Extension Service.

Dr. Charles DeVinne from the Animal Care Clinic in Peterborough, NH. Large and small animal veterinarian.

David Kennard & Colin Kennard of Wellscroft Farm in Chesham has 200 commercial Dorset cross ewes and has had over 11,000 lambs born there in the last 30 years. He does both spring and fall lambing for the ethnic and freezer market.


NOTE:
The afternoon session is outside, hands-on in a barn. Please wear warm clothes or jumpsuit and CLEANED boots.

Afternoon Session: Will be at Wellscroft Farm, 167 Sunset Hill Chesham. (5 minutes from the school). Turn left out of the school onto Chesham Road. At the 4-way intersection go straight onto Breed Road, go 1/8 mile and take the first left onto Sunset Hill. Go one mile and take the second driveway on the left.

12:15 – 2:00 - Live demonstrations and hands on opportunity to “clip, dip, strip”. Tail docking, ear tagging, vaccinations, tubing, hypothermic revitalization, setting up jugs, tour of Wellscroft Farm’s facility, and if we are lucky, witness a live birth.

The participants will break into three groups and go to the following concurrent sessions.

STATION 1 - Tiger Batchelder – Shepherd at Wellscroft Farm

1. Assessing lambs and udder
2. Treating eyes
3. Vaccinations
4. Ear tagging
5. Tail docking
6. Record keeping
7. Use of Lamb Bar


STATION 2
- Colin Kennard – Of Wellscroft Farm

1. Lambing facilities – jugs, pens etc.
2. Discussion of lambing procedure
(hopefully deliver a lamb!)
3. Clip – dip – strip – flip
4. Grafting
5. Lambing kit


STATION 3
- David Kennard – Of Wellscroft Farm

1. Tubing demonstration
2. Distocia
3. Prolapses
4. Condition scoring
5. Nutrition of ewes & feeding set ups
6. General questions
